Cleveland, MS: On January 22, 2010, the Delta Kappa chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha won the state step completion at the 2010 Mississippi District conference of the fraternity. The step show was held on the campus of Delta State University, and most of the state's chapters were represented, including The University of Southern Mississippi (Mu Xi), Alcorn State University (Delta Kappa)), Jackson State University (Delta Phi), Delta State University (Omicron Psi), Tougaloo College (Gamma Upsilon), Mississippi Valley State University (Zeta Phi), The University of Mississippi (Nu Upsilon), and Mississippi State University (Kappa Beta).
The conference was host to many competitions between the Mississippi chapters. Many of which Delta Kappa did an exceptionally good job such as the "Scholar's Bowl", the display board which exhibits the community services that the chapter has done over the past year, and notably the oratorical competition where senior Alcorn student, Melton Harvey displayed quite a hidden talent receiving a standing ovation after his dynamic deliverance of the speech "Have We Lost the Common Touch?"
The step team's win earned them a spot in this year's regional convention where they will compete against the top step teams from Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. The step show will take place on March 5, 2010 in Jackson, Mississippi. The Venue has not been selected yet.
